DOLLAR TREE STORES, INC. SELECTS BRIAR CREEK, PA FOR DISTRIBUTION CENTER
CHESAPEAKE, Va. - September 14, 2000 -- Dollar Tree Stores, Inc. (Nasdaq: DLTR), the nation's largest $1.00 discount variety store chain, recently announced the construction of a new 603,000 square foot distribution facility located in Briar Creek, Pennsylvania.
Dollar Tree currently operates five distribution centers. The Briar Creek facility will replace an existing distribution center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that was added to the logistics network through the recent merger with Dollar Express. The Briar Creek site is strategically located on 75 acres in northeastern Pennsylvania adjacent to Interstate 80. This facility is projected to be operational in the first quarter of 2002.
"Dollar Tree initiated a search for a site in May 2000," commented Steve White, Senior Vice President, Logistics. "Our final decision to locate in Briar Creek was based on many things. The Briar Creek location is the best fit for our logistics model and offers a superior interstate system with easy access to the New England area. We were also impressed with the proactive and collaborative business approach exhibited by the state of Pennsylvania, Briar Creek's community support and Penn's Northeast, an economic development group for northeastern Pennsylvania."
Upon completion, this fully automated distribution center will service Dollar Tree stores located in the Mid Atlantic states and New England. It will support annual sales in excess of $600 million when totally operational. The 603,000 square foot distribution center can be expanded to one million square feet. The facility is expected to require a $38 million capital investment and to create approximately 150 jobs.
Dollar Tree's sixth distribution center in Savannah, Georgia is currently under construction and is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2001.
Headquartered in Chesapeake, Virginia, Dollar Tree Stores, Inc. offers a vast array of products including housewares, seasonal goods, food, toys, party goods, personal accessories, books, candles and more, all at a $1.00 price point. Dollar Tree operates 1,634 stores in 36 states as of June 30, 2000.
